External (usb) sound card, internal sound card w/ inputs, an adapter from the cassette player to mini stereo 1/8" on your mac's line-in.........

Assuming your mac has a CD burner all you need is a cassette player and two products from Griffin; the USB sound adapter iMic and the free software Final Vinyl. I've done about 300 LPs and cassettes this way. Final Vinyl has a rather basic editing set but it does produce useable recordings (www.griffintechnology.com). The website also has a good tutorial.
