Go into Apple System Profiler (About this Mac) More Info > Serial ATA > Rotational gives you the speed.

That's a late 2008 MacBook which was shipped from the factory with a 5400 RPM drive unless you replaced it with a faster model.

Harry, what kind of Mac are you using? Mac Pro with a 10k drive?

That drive looks like a 300GB WD Raptor. those are all 10K RPM.

BTW harry, my iMac with WD 7200RPM drive does not show the Rotational Rate either under 10.7.4 Lion. Just says Type Rotational.

Yes it is a Velociraptor and is my backup/Windows 7 drive. My Mercury Electra would not take the latest EFI update from OWC and they asked me to send it back RMA. Problem is last seen in tracking at Chicago USPS International Letter Centre and OWC are about to do a claim.

The Velociraptor is much slower than the SSD alas.

You have to select the top of what it's connected to. It doesn't show if you select the drive itself.

I did the top. Will check again.

Harry, still the VR is the fastest ROTATIONAL hard drive on the market.

Hmm, Dennis that is weird. I guess the next thing to do would be look up the model/serial number on the manufacturer's website.

I know what speed the drive is, it's just strange that the OP's system and mine don't show the RPM like yours and Harry's.

Yes Dennis it is the fastest rotational, but it is surprising how far it is behind an SSD>

I understand that quite well. I am just not a complete fan of SSD's yet especially on OSX systems. Prices are still quite high for decent space.
