Just upgraded to OS Lion and strange things are happening. Why for some reason do software packages start opening up automatically?
Any ideas?
Thanks

Do you have them set to open automatically on startup? Go to System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items to see if anything is listed there.

Also, on shut down, Lion is set to open up your windows and applications just as you left when you log back in by default. Are you quitting these programs before you shut down?

And quitting going into the Menu Bar and choosing Quit rather than hitting the little red dot?

When you shutdown, you'll be presented with the following dialog:

If that checkbox is checked, any applications open when you shutdown will be relaunched when you reboot. Thus, if it's checked and Word & Excel are open when you shutdown, they will be opened once you log in.

This would be my best guess. Make sure you're completely quiting the program instead of just closing the window.
