I haven't used my PowerBook G4 15'' 1.25 GHz OSX 10.5.8 for a few months and turned it on today to find a number of updates needing installing (iTunes, Safari + 4 others), which I went ahead with. I was asked to reboot, which I did. The computer turned off, then on but froze on the grey apple screen, with no rotating symbol.

I've tried...

- Holding down Command-Opt-P-R while powering on.
- Holding down Shift-Ctrl-Command-Opt while powering on.
- Holding down Shift while powering on.
- Holding down Command-S while powering on.

All give the same results - the grey screen with Apple logo and silence.

Also worth noting that I don't have the Leopard disc.

Any help would be FANTASTIC!

Thanks in advance. (read more)

Ok...you don't have a "Tiger" disk...what about a "Leopard" disk. Since 10.5.8 is Leopard.

After what you have already tried...the very next thing I would do is try to boot from an OS install disk. Since you do not have your Leopard disk...this REALLY limits your options.

It's possible that your hard drive has died...that's why you need to boot from an OS install disk. Firstly to even see if the computer will boot from a OS disk...and secondly...to run Disk Utility to check the HD.

Thanks Nick - your advice is much appreciated. Will have to have a serious hunt for that disc then!

Many thanks.

Hopefully by "hunt"...you mean you have one & just need to find it. If you have to purchase one...it will cost you $80-$100 on e-Bay (and no longer sold at the Apple Store).

Good luck,

- Nick
