Syncing with iPhone using Outlook

I have MS Office Mac 2011 installed on my iMac and am having significant problems syncing my Outlook contacts and calendar with my iPhone. Is there a "foolproof" set up process to avoid duplicate calendar and contact entries on both the iPhone and the iMac.
