My Macbook Pro has a folder with a blinking question mark. I am new to the Mac platform. What does this mean? What to do? Thanks

It means that it can't find a hard drive to boot the OS from.

Either your hard drive has died, the cable came unconnected, or it got erased. Do you have an OS X install disc?

Yep thats about the gist of things. Insert disk, restart holding down 'option' and take it from there.

Cheers

Macbook Pro problems

OK- I have inserted the disk while holding the option key. I get to a spot where it says "Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X, and there is a blank section with no disk available to select. Also, unable to type anything into that screen. What to do?

It would seem that the drive isn't recognized which could be caused by a variety of things. Worst case, the hard drive has died. Best case, the cable has come loose (which will only require a simple reconnection). How comfortable are you with checking the connection for your HD?
