Dumb question - turning off IMac when it is in energy saver mode

Hello Mac-ers silly question I am sure but I turned off my IMac this morning while it was in energy saving mode or sleep mode (not sure if there is a difference)
Can this harm my IMac?

I have an outlet strip that I normally turn off all my electronics and forgot that my IMac was still on.

If this is the first time you've done it, it doesn't necessarily harm the system, this is akin to losing power for a moment and getting it back causing the Mac to restart.

But you do want to avoid doing it repeatedly since that might cause small corruptions of files on your HD that need to be repaired each time..

Yep, depending on the disk operations at the time this can lead to data corruption, or loss. In general, regardless of the operating system used, computers are not very happy with non-graceful shutdowns.

I've said it before, but I'll mention it again - just for you. Buy an UPS and run your iMac through that, not a power strip.

Hello guys thanks for the replies. this was the first time and chcscag I am very stubborn and appreciate your help and assistance on my questions. I will most likely buy a ups strip soon.
