If you're talking about replacing the disc inside your iMac then it should be a 3.5" disk

A 2.5" sata disk has the same data and power connections but it won't fit correctly. You also need to consider the temperature sensor.

I'd recommend looking up your iMac on the ifixit site

Yes, the HD inside my iMac. I did pick up the 2.5". So, I need the 3.5" disk, I'm gathering? Dangit.

Yep 3.5" desktop hard drive for your iMac. Now you have the laptop drive pop it in an external case and use for backups. USB will be fine however the case needs to be able to take SATA drives.
