download icon disappeared from dock & NOT in finder

Unless you've completely deleted the Downloads folder you'll find it in Finder here:
Mac HD - Users - 'your username' - Downloads

From there you can just drag it to the dock, right-click, Display as folder

If it's not there it maybe still be in the trash. So you can right-click and restore it.

If it's not in the trash you'll need to create a new downloads folder in the location above.

I looked AGAIN in Finder and found the download icon and put in back in the dock. Thank u much for your help. blobubbles

Right click the folder, half way up select the ' Display as" Folder option.

I successfully created a folder for my Download icon in the dock -- thx to u, Gandalph.

What you actually created is a "shortcut" to or, in MacSpeak, an alias of the actual Downloads folder, which resides in the Finder window, not on the Dock.

all I know is my Tech, when he set up my Mac, put a Download icon in my dock which I suddenly lost. Thx for the info, tho. bee

You're welcome. Just refining the terminology for you there. It's easy to "lose" a Dock icon. If you happen to click and drag one and let go, you'll see an animated "puff of smoke" and the icon is gone. But, as you've now seen, it's easy to put them back, as long as you know how.
