How to remove user icon?

At the top of the screen between the Spotlight icon and the Battery Charging icon there's a black user icon. Can this be hidden or removed?

Yes, System Preferences>Users & Groups>"Login Options" under the user accounts list>Show fast user switch menu

User icon

Thanks very much ... the icon has gone. But it's strange that it should have suddenly appeared because I hadn't done anything in System Prefs.
