Discs/USBs not showing up on desktop?

When I put in a disc or USB, nothing shows up on the desktop. They can be found under "Disc Utility" or "Computer" but nothing on the desktop. Any help?

Silver M1 iMac 512/16/8/8 macOS 11.6
Go into Finder > Preferences and ensure Show Hard Disks etc are selected.
