I just noticed today, PDF files won't open in Preview. I know the PDF files are good because I can open them on the iPad, but they are not automatically opening in Preview like they have in the past. Preview is not even getting turned on when the PDF is used.

I just updated Adobe Reader, but it is not the PDF reader of choice. Frankly I rarely ever use it, I use preview. Can anybody tell me what is up or how to correct this?? This is happening in both Safari and Firefox(my preferred browser) and I'm using Snow Leopard. Thanks

Right click (control click) on a PDF file. Select "get info". Toward the bottom of the dialog you'll see "Open with:" and an arrow. Click on the arrow and you'll be presented with the applications that can open PDF files. Select Preview and then click on the box that says: "Change All..."

You'll also notice that when you select Preview it will say below it: "Use this application to open all documents like this one."

I should say these are links to PDFs that I can open in both the iPad and in Google. I can also open them on my Mini in Firefox and Safari with no problems. I should have stated that better in my original post. When I right click/control click on the blank page where the PDF link took me(where the pdf should be) nothing happens. If I hit Command+I, I get this page info

.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what it is.

I found some PDFs saved locally on my computer and when I right clicked on them, they said the default was preview and they opened perfectly in preview.

Ah, that explains everything.

What you have going on is that the built-in PDF handler in FF and Safari (which had apparently been set to download the files and open them in Preview) has been disabled by lovely, lovely Adobe Reader. Wasn't that thoughtful of them? Only it doesn't work right, does it?

What you want to do is open Acrobat, go into its preferences and UNcheck the option to display PDFs in browsers.

preview problem with pdf

Noticed the thread above and I've been having similar problems…
1: pdf files I try to open in received emails are grey and won't open in preview.
2. .docx files in received emails are as above and won't open in Word 2008.

I try saving to documents and opening from there but no such luck.
All my updates are up to date too.
It just seems to be the files received via email, all others already on mac are fine….

This is killing me, I'm unsure whats causing this.

The fix is on page 2.
I guess that depends on how you have your preferences set here on Mac Forums.

Page 1 for me, Post #13.

Interesting.
