Send iMessages to SMS

Is there any possibility for your iphone to automatically send an imessage as an sms messages to another person? Like if i was writing a message on imessage and the person i wanted to talk to was offline (not connected via wifi or have poor signal) and it sends an SMS instead of an imessage. I really don't want to turn off my iMessage but would want to know if the phone can automatically detect if that person is online or not to send an imessage as a sms. Sorry if this is confusing to read but I hope you guys get it.

If the iMessage cannot be delivered to the recipient phone for whatever reason, the phone will ask you if you want to resend as an SMS.

PS. iMessage works perfectly fine with 3G data already, so this question is actually moot.
