Generally speaking...the Apple hardware test application is only available on disk #2 of the two gray disk set that originally shipped with a computer when new. If you don't have those original disks...then you're probably out of luck.

On the positive side...if the only issue with the computer is running slow...this is really not something the Apple hardware test would detect. The Apple hardware test is for detecting hardware malfunction issues.

Some possible reasons this computer is running slowly are:

1. Because the computer is old.
2. Because the hard drive (as you mentioned) only has 8gig of free space remaining...which isn't very much.
3. You could also launch Disk Utility...and repair permissions.

The biggest issue I see...is the hard drive is too full. There must be some stuff on there that can be deleted (or moved to an external drive) to free up some space.

Agree with Nick the hard drive is over populated! If you really want to run Apple Hardware Test depends on your model G4 which you have not provided. For some G4 models you can download Apple Hardware Test, drag to desktop and then the left hand column of Disk Utility, pop in a CD and burn a bootable copy. Here is the link for AHT, G4's are the third download listed:-

That will not solve your hard drive problem. You do need 15-20% free space for the drive to work anywhere near efficiently.

Good one Harry!:) As soon as I started reading your post...I remembered that some of the AHT programs were downloadable. I was working on a problematic Powerbook G4 a while back...and I remembered coming across those AHT files/links.
