I'm considering purchasing the following External Dual-Layer Burner Drive:
LaCie d2 DVD-+RW 22X with LightScribe. It has USB 2.0 & FireWire 400 connections. It doesn't read DVD-RAM disks.

How important is not being able to read DVD-RAM disks? Does that mean it can't burn DVD-RAM disks?

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Do you actually use any RAM discs? These are usually associated with some DVD players such as Panasonic etc. Be assured if it can't read RA it will not be able to burn them. If you do need the RAM feature look for a Pioneer DVR-118 which does write RAM.

They are available in external models.
