Chrome

I hope someone can help me. I am new to Mac, just had it a couple of weeks. I have installed Chrome as I read on here it was good. Tonight when I logged on I have a number one showing in the icon on the launch bar and I have no idea why it's there. Any ideas?

If you're downloading something, Chrome will put a number in the bottom right hand corner indicating how many downloads are happening. This is what it will look like:
