Stream videos from hard drive connected to airport extreme with apple tv

Hi All,
This is my first post/query. So hi to all.

I have an airport extreme and 1 TB USB hard disk connected to it.
I also have an apple tv (5.0.1) and a PS3.

My question is will I be able to watch the content (videos + music) from my air disk directly on my HDTV with out having my macbook pro as an interface?

I would love to control the content from apple tv, but ps3 is also fine.
And most of my videos are either avi or mkv.

Did a lot of searching on the internet and I see people talking about aTV flash etc etc but no one is very specific how to do this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
