I find flash player very irritating and think it slows my iMac.
Are there any tips to controlling this unwanted most of the time piece of crud short of uninstalling?
Thanks

Install a Flash blocking browser plugin. For Safari, for Firefox and for Chrome. If you're using Opera, you can block all plugins and activate them manually by clicking them if you set the on demand plugin preference (Opera > Preferences > Advanced > Content > check "Enable plug-ins only on demand").

Flash is slowly starting to die. I don't really notice it slowing down on my maxed out MacBook Pro but on my older iMac it seems really sluggish when I am using flash. Make sure it is up to date and also try disabiling flash.
