I am a recently converted windows user, so please bear with me.

I downloaded a DMG installed the software removed it (not what I was looking for). Put the dog in the trash. When I try to empty the trash I get the message that the dmg is in use.

How do I get rid of this? I put it on my desktop and tried to eject, but couldn't find a eject button.

Thanks

Lafin, because if I didn't lag I'd be cry in

You need to quit the application that you opened from the dmg file. Then you can eject the dmg and trash it.

Right-click or command-click to get a contextual menu like in Windows, and then eject the mounted disk image. Then repeat and send to trash. Then empty trash to really be rid of it.
