Logging out without closing all applications

I was just wondering if there's a way to log out of an account without closing all of the applications that are running. My login on my Imac is an administrator account, and my wife's is just a regular one. I'd like to be able to leave programs running, but be able to log out if my wife needs to use the comp. Is this even possible? Thanks.

Yes, it is called "Fast User Switching". You can enable it in your System Preferences.
