I am running MS Word 2008 (12.0.0) on OS X (10.7.3) and it is often acting strangely. I am wondering if others may experience similar things, such as:

  • overlapping lines of text that only correct themselves when scrolling up and down
  • paragraphs that are shown as double-spaced although all settings imply they should be single; this randomly corrects itself when scrolling through the document
  • self-produced figures that get distorted when scrolling through the document

MS Word is running on another Mac in the house and all is well.

Might be a graphics card glitch. More info about what model Mac you have would be helpful.

In addition to what chas_m stated, you're missing several important updates to MS Office 2008. Use the MS software update in Office to bring 2008 up to date.

It is a Macbook Air bought from the Apple Store in late October 2011.

I will run the update and see if I can find Office 2011 version from my employer.

Are there any tests to run to see if the graphics card is the culprit? My wife uses it primarily and she isn't really observant of such things, or at least, doesn't tell me if there are some minor issues. I have Apple Care for the laptop so hopefully if anything is wrong it will be covered.
