I recently backed up my iMac onto an external hard disk. I partitioned half of it for storage (left in fat format) and the other half for back up (mac OS extended [journaled]). Once it was backed up, everything was working fine until I unplugged it. Ever since, it has not been detected by my iMac or any laptops, however, it IS detected on Windows machines and a newer iMac that my family owns.

If it is detected by a IMAC of you're famely run disk repair for the MAC OS Journaled
partition .
And try chkdisk.exe on a windows machine for the fat partition , any how I think that is what they called it I am not sure because I do not use windows
I suppose that you eject or umount before unplugging the HD
