• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have a MacBook that was manufactured in March of 2010. I am using the Safari operating system (10.6.8). I have all the factory software and have never purchased any additional software. I have a bunch of movies on D.V.D. and I wish to learn how to record short segments of these D.V.D.'s to save in the laptop's hard drive as .mov or .mpg files. Can I do this with the pre-installed factory software ?, or do I need to purchase additional software ? Thank you, to all who reply to my question. :D

Safari is not an operating system, it's a browser. Your operating system is Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8.

Are those movies home movies you recorded or are they commercial movies purchased on DVD? In any event, did you read the Sticky Notice at the top of this forum? LINK

Home Movie DVD's (I should have specified that in my original post)

Hi.........yes, I did read the information at the start of the website, and I am fully aware that ripping movies is illegal. The DVD's I am referring to are home movies that family members made for me. I have quite a number of them on DVD and don't know what software is required to record them off of my laptop's screen. I want to convert them to .mov or .mpg files so that I can upload the family movies to my YouTube account. And yes, I mistakingly called my operating system "Safari", but do realize that I have "Snow Leopard". Can anyone tell me what software is required to convert my home movie DVD's to .mov or .mpg files ? Please help me. Thank you.

you can use Handbrake to rip home DVDs:

HandBrake

Just set the source by navigating to video_ts on your DVD, the set an output file. this will give you an .m4v that will be perfect for youtube.
