At our school we have iMac with leopard for students and the server is a Mac Pro also running leopard. I think one time the IT tried to switch to a server running lion they couldn't get it to work, I don't know the exact detail, but wonder if they are compatible or not.

Compatible in what sense? There is much you can do with a server (and the clients). It's very possible that some things will work and others won't. How do your clients interact with the server?

The server stores a database of student list and provides log in and several GB of personal storage space to each student, that's all it does. Last time they used a server running lion they had problem importing the student list.
