I just downloaded and installed Onyx on my MacbookPro and it says that I should back up my mac before using it. I have an external hard drive that I can use what folders should I be most concerned with backing up? Is there anyway to back up my mac like on a PC with a back up recovery date?

Use Time Machine which you should already have in your applications folder or download Carbon Copy Cloner (donation ware).

Does Time Machine back up one's whole drive or just certain data?

Time Machine backs up everything that has changed since your last backup.
So the first backup, it will copy every folder/file on the disk.

It needs an external drive. It backs up your Users, Applications, settings and data.

It does not back-up the core OS, but if you ever do a re-install then you can bring your most recent back-up to life after installation to have a completely restored mac

This is not correct. Time Machine does, in fact, back up the OS and *everything* else on the boot drive. It does not produce a bootable clone but 100% of the files are there.
