I have a power mac G5 with 8 dimm sockets(i think, it goes from 0-7 in the "about my Mac") So I want to upgrade the memory, its at 1024mb now, with the first 2 dimm sockets, 512mb & 512mb. So I went to crucials website and they gave me these

http://www.crucial.com/store/listpa...5+(Dual+2.0GHz+DDR,+8+DIMM+sockets)&submit=Go

to pick from. Which one should I get? I want to add 1 gb more, but I dont know if I should get 2 512mb sticks or 1 stick of 1gb. Also they listed some of the memories with default quantities of 2, does that mean that it wont work if I only buy 1?

thanks

also it looks like I save about 10% on all of my orders from there, am I getting a good deal on this memory, or do you guys know of a better(cheaper) place to get ram.

thanks again!

Memory for the G5 has to be installed in pairs. So if you want to add only 1GB, then you will need to get 2 - 512MB.

This is correct, for the PowerMac G5. The iMac G5 does not need to have memory installed in pairs. Just wanted to specify...

That ram looks ok for the Mac. But first tell us just which mac you have. I take it you have a power mac G5, but which one? Is it one of the older macs or one of the new ones, because the new ones take the ddr2 ram and the older ones take the ddr pc3200 ram.

If it is an older Mac like mine (pm 2.0) that takes the Pc3200 ram then check out NewEggs price. As you only want to add 1 gig of ram you will have to buy two 512's. NewEgg has Corsair Select 512 chips for $34.67, about half of the price of the crucial. A gig that way would cost you $69.34 against the $130 something of the Crucial. Good ram, i recommend it, i have 2 gigs of it in my pm and a gig in my iMac G5.

If you have a newer pm then you will probably need the ddr2 ram. NewEgg also has that at some good prices.

Ok, you have a pm like mine. The link to the new egg stuff is good for your system, i use it in both of mine and it has worked great for the last 5 months or so. Two more of the 512 chips will give you a total of 1 1/2 gig. That is 1 1/4 gig for each processor as what you have now are 2 256 megers. If you wanted to buy 2 1 gig chips that would give you a total of 2 1/2 gig or 1.1/4 gig per processor.

If you have any idea that you might want to upgrade ram in the future i would suggest buying 2 1 gig chips now and then 2 more later should you need more.
