I am new to this place and my imac. When I start my computer, Quicken Essentials and iTunes automatically start. How can I stop this? Thanks in advance. Michelle

Is this a new iMac running Lion? You didn't give us much information to go on... However, assuming it's a new machine running Lion, do this:

Open System Preferences (the icon that looks like 3 turning gears) and click on the "General" tab. When that opens, remove the check from the box that says

"Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps"

Also be sure to close and quit all your applications when shutting down your iMac. If the above doesn't help, post back.
