In Windows you just need to select all the files that you want to rename and they are numbered sequentially, i dont seem to be able to do this on my mac any ideas?

I'm not sure how it was done, but Automator has that ability. I've see it done. Perhaps a search in these forums, or Apple forums, or Google will get an explanation.

Before you start messing around with Automator, back up the folder you're going to be altering. Sometimes you think you have it right, but it ends up being completely wrong.

...but, yes, Automator can do a batch rename.
