Pdf dilemma

My first post...hope you can help me

I have a 6 month old MacBook Pro. When I get a PDF on a website and try to open it, it tries to open with Quick Time, goes to a black screen, I see the Quick Time symbol. If I am lucky, it shows me the first page of the PDF but I cannot open it or print the document.

I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Apple yesterday and eventually was forwarded to a senior advisor who was very nice but couldn't solve it no matter what. He said it would be referred to their engineers.

I have Adobe10 and can open PDF files in Firefox but not in Safari. Is there a way to open PDF files in Preview? There isn't any choice right now, it just goes to Quick Time.

Any ideas?

This sounds very odd to me. Two hours and unable to sort it out . . . Doubt if I can beat that, but can you download the PDF and then open it with Preview (I assume from your post you are trying to open it within the browser)?

The issue here seems to be a conflict between the Adobe plugin and the QT one. Adobe has noted that there is a compatibility problem with the Reader plugin and Safari 5.1 (see here).

Let's try this - disable the Adobe web plugin in Reader: Adobe Reader > Preferences > Internet (I'm doing this from memory so I might be off here). That should force Safari to use its built in PDF engine (which is probably fine for your needs).

Thanks to both of you who replied!

Razormac's suggestion worked! Funny the senior Apple Advisor never thought of that. I will pass it on to him.

The first Apple 'helper' I had (not sure what they call themselves) told me to put Adobe in the trash. The second 'helper' told me to install Adobe.

Anyway, I see how I can do it now.
