Is your G4 a Stock Powermac G4 Ethernet? If so it's probably a 16Meg ATI AGP card. I am pretty sure mine went up to 1280x1024 but since I upgraded it to a Radeon I can't remember anymore. Where are you trying to change the resolution? Not at the little monitor by the clock I hope. Open Display from the System Preferences and click on the Display tab. All the resolutions your card supports will be listed there. If 1024 is the highest then it's probably a limit of the built in graphics card. You can get a better card if you need to.

i dont think this helps, but here goes:

the 1280/1024 resolution dissapeared after i had my mac at my moms, and she has a 17" CRT monitor (2" larger than mine)... could that have ANYTHING to do with it???

isn't there a button that lets you open the monitor control panel? try that if you haven't.

I am on my G3 with ATI 16Meg Video and here is a screen shot of the the Display Properties in Panther 10.3.9 on my Dell Trinitron 17" monitor. DO NOT click on the Monitor icon next to the clock, Open System Preferences either from the Apple menu or in the dock. Once in System Preferences, Click on Displays. There it should show what the attachment I am sending shows. If not then it thinks your monitor is not able to display higher. Let me know what you see. If this will do 1280 and higher than yours should also. My Sawtooth G4-500 shows the same options as this machine and will do 1280 just fine with the stock ATI 16 Meg card.

Command+Shift+3. It'll show up as "picture 1" on your desktop. It'll save as a "PNG" type file (in Tiger anyway... not as sure about Panther.) Command+Shift+4 to click and drag your own window for the screenshot.

Then you can open it in preview, go "Save As", select JPEG and then adjust the quality to reduce file size without affecting the overall picture too much. For full screen shots, this can reduce file size by a factor of 4 or more.

Let me get back to you. I think it's detecting your monitor wrong.

You are sure that 15" monitor went to 1280x1024 on your Mac before your moms house?

This is a long shot but I wonder if Zapping the PRAM might help? It does store some boot settings and Macs do detect the monitor on bootup. Command+Option+P+R when you reboot right after the Chime hold down the keys. Hold them till you hear at least 2 chimes. It will reset the PRAM. See if that helps. If not, I so far can't duplicate it here nor find anything on Google. Will keep looking though.
