• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have been trying to watch old re-runs of Dr. Who and I keep running into pages that ask me to download one of the above listed Plug-ins in order to watch. I don't like to download arbitrarily, so my question has two parts... are these good plug-ins and is there a safe website from which to acquire them?

I would be EXTREMELY cautious about these non-standard, oddball plug-ins ... they are THE major source of malware on the Mac, since they masquerade as "legitimate" plug-ins and users willingly install them.

Congratulations to you for having the sense to be suspicious.

I'd suggest finding a friend who has Netflix (or heck, getting it yourself, it's a whole $8 a month), there are quite a number of Doctor Who episodes available, both the recent (2005) reboot and the older series (selected stories). There are also a number of stories on YouTube (usually broken up into parts) you can find by typing "Doctor Who (name of doctor)."

Finally, you can often rent or buy Doctor Who DVDs cheap from video rental places. I've found them in pawn shops, even!
