I just upgraded from an eMac running Mac OSX 10.5.8 Leopard, to a refurbished iMac with a Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor. The new machine was delivered with Mac OSX 10.7 Lion installed. I now find that I cannot install Microsoft Office 2004 on this machine. So, does anyone know if I could install Mac OSX 10.5.8 Leopard on this newer iMac?

Unfortunately, no, you can't. Your new Mac's hardware post-dates Leopard (10.5) and so it won't have drivers for your hardware. It may run Snow Leopard, depending on its vintage, but I wouldn't go through that kind of trouble just for that (ancient) version of Office. Especially when you can pick up the far superior 2011 version of Office for $100.

No, you can't. It probably can run 10.6 Snow Leopard, and MS Office will install under that.

You can not install Leopard on that machine and Lion will not run PPC applications. The solution is to buy Office 2011.

Thanks everyone. I wish I had know about the incompatibility of some apps with Lion. I also use Quicken 2007 and it won't install either. This is a refurbished iMac, purchase from Apple, originally made in 2011. I believe it came with Snow Leopard "new" and only was upgraded to Lion when refurb'd at the factory:eek:

I wouldn't go back though... Office 2011 (the downloadable form) is available from Amazon for $100. It's worth the price, just in performance alone, let alone features and compatibility.

Quicken 2007 was just re-released for Lion yesterday. Download the update here:

Thanks for the reply. I found out from Apple that Mac OS Snow Leopard will not install on this iMac. I tried your link to Intuit and it was just a "support" article saying the version was available. There was no link to purchase/ download a Mac Os Lion compatible version of Quicken 2007. I am trying to get Intuit respond for clarification. :D Thanks again for the help
