Help Upgrading From Server

hi,

i recently purchased a used mac pro that has server 10.6.8 on it.
i want to use lion 10.7 but not the server version.
when i try to install 10.7 by dvd it won't let me.
how can i update the system by dvd without formatting and losing all my programs?

Your best bet is to back it up with time machine, wipe it and install Lion then bring your programs back with migration assistant - which will kick in when you launch a fresh Lion install
