New HD not installing Snow leopard

My HD crashed in my macbook again. The first time I took it in to the Apple store and they repair it for free. This time they wanted about 130.00 to replace it. So i was going to try it my self but it has not been going great. I just received my snow leopard install dvd, but the HD wont take it. I had to start it up holding the option key just to get the installer screen, but once I chose the HD as the destination for the disc, it had said "You can'tupgrade this version of mac OS X.


Please help.

So have you installed a new blank hard disk?

Is this a full retail copy of Snow Leopard?
