Macbook Pro blue screen

A friend of mine has a Macbook Pro using Leopard OSX 10 - on startup he sometimes gets just a blue screen - sometimes it does boot but after using for a few minutes gets the wheel of doom and locks up.

Has anyone any ides what could be causing the problem?
