Early 2011 13" Macbook Pro - neither USB working. if i connect flash drives they will appear under Storage in About this Mac, but won't show up on the desktop and so aren't accessible/\.

I have restarted, rebooted and reset the SMC. Now what?

Have you tried connecting anything other than the flash drives? How are the flash drives formatted?

Hmm. Reason I ask on formatting is because people will bring their Windows formatted drives to their Mac and wonder why they don't work correctly.

What kind of flash drives, do they have the exposed USB contacts? And do they show up in Disk Utility?

Open a Finder Window. Do they show in there?
Open Finder Preferences make sure External Disks is checked under Show these items on the desktop.
