If you tell us which Mac you have and what version of OS X it's running, we can answer your question.

Is there some particular reason you're not using the built-in Time Machine?

Using Time-Machine would require me to reformat my external hd and erase everything.

You could use either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (shareware and donationware, respectively) and save the backup to a disc image.

Of course this begs the question: how are you backing up the stuff that's on the external HD?

the only way you can backup your programs to an external HD, from my experiences & w/o creating a disk image, is to have a HD that is formatted HFS+. Time Machine will automatically format and CCClone will only copy over your USER info if formatted in either of the fat formatting modes. I stand corrected if I am in error in my statements
