camera roll keeps showing original photo

hello- i took pictures and cropped about 400 of them. I saved them, and on my camera roll they show the cropped version. But when I try to import them to iPhoto, they show up as the original photo again, without my editing. This also happened when I tried to upload them directly to dropbox. Any ideas? This is also happening to someone at school on an iPad, when they crop photos and try to import them to iMovie.
