Hey guys,

Think I've got to the root of problems with my iMac freezing on startup, more than likely is a graphics card issue.

Looking up my model online it looks like it comes with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB card, but I've seen a NVIDIA 7300 GT 128mb for cheaper so I can at least test it. Would this card work in this machine?

Graphic cards on iMacs are not really changeable.

Check with your local Mac dealer or better yet Apple directly to sort out a permanent solution.

Thanks, but I'm reading conflicting information on this. Some say the card in this model is changeable, and the parts are available on eBay, but others like yourself say they're not. From what I've read taking it to Apple will be really expensive and local repair folk have quoted me around £300, which isn't really an option.

There is one 24" with a changeable card. It's not like a normal PC card, but it's changeable.

Yours is a 2008 24" correct? I think I have the manual and will check.

Yeah it's an "early 2008" 24" 3.06 GHz model, seen here iMac "Core 2 Duo" 3.06 24-Inch (Early 2008) Specs (Early 2008, MB398LL/A, iMac8,1, A1225, 2211) @ EveryMac.com.

So if there's only one model with a changeable card I'm guessing it has to come from this exact model of iMac, not a 24" or 20" from the same time with a different spec?

I did have the manual after all. Yes, the graphics card in that machine is a separate board and can be replaced. Lots of plumbing on it for the heat pipe. If you do find one on ebay, be sure it's for your model.
