external hard drive partition

Hi all i have bought a seagate go flex external hard drive which the final cut x archive feature does not recognise as it was formatted for both mac and pc so i had to reformat to the mac os extended journaled.The only way i could do it was to create 1 partition as i have read on some help sites.My question is this...have i done the right thing and what does this partition thingy do.

Yes, you have done the right thing.

Partitioning just splits the drive into separate "drives". So, with a 500Gb drive you could have two 250Gb partitions, or four 100Gb partitions, or one 100Gb and two 200Gb partitions and so on, with each partition acting like a separate hard drive.

When formatting with Disk Utility, your drive has to have a minimum of one partition

thank you very much for your reply mighty...so if i have 1 partition am i right in thinking i have two separate areas to store stuff and if so how do i do it and how would i know if one side was bigger than the other.
