do I need to buy a microphone?

When I Skype, the sound the other person hears cuts in and out. He checked his computer by Skyping with others and his speakers are ok. A Mac store told me I need a USB headset. But my speakers work fine. Wouldn't it just be a USB microphone that I need to buy? Thanks.

MacBook Pro 13" Intel i5 4GB RAM. Intel P4 w/ HT @ 3.0GHz 4GB RAM Debian GNU/Linux
I'm literally using Skype right now talking to a friend. I have no problems. Maybe it's your internet connection?

No, that's not it, my macbook has a microphone built in like yours, which always worked until now. Now it's not working. So, do I need to buy a usb headset or a usb microphone?
