Hi Mac community,

I am new user. One of our product requirement is for the .dmg or .pkg package when downloaded from the web browser should automatically be mounted and opened. The user should not go to the Downloads folder and double click on the .dmg.

Any pointers on how to enable this would be great. Also, if there existing real applications with this behavior, it would help.

Thanks,
Anamika

That would have to be an end user decision to set that because giving web developers the power to do this opens up a major security hole. Thus, you can't force this through a browser. The last thing any of us should want are browsers that open files without our consent.

Basically, just like I described. I want the the .dmg file when downloaded in the downloads folder auto-mounts and opens. Currently, when I download the .dmg, it downloads but i have to navigate to the downloads folder and double-click in order for it to mount and start the installation.
Thanks.

I don't know the solution for that, but the one thing I can do is strongly advise against such behavior.
You are defeating some basic controls that have been put in place to protect you.

Not to mention that a web designer can't do this. As far as I know (I'm willing to admit that someone could probably find a way around this), this is impossible unless the browser has been set to open files once they are downloaded.
