may have nothing to do with FCP.

Verify your Disk and your File Permissions. You may have a corrupt source file in the project. I had this in FCPX last week, but verifying and fixing the file permissions worked.

Is there a way I can tell if a file is corrupt?

go through each one in FCP and see if they all play, all the way through. Do this for the events as well as the projects. If FCP fails out with one, you will know which one it was and can redo it.
