• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hi
I am currently editing my cousins wedding video at the moment, but the camcorder which is a canon legria fs306 saved everything in MOD format, i put the SD card into the macbook, and converted a lot of stuff with programs off the internet, this took ages and takes quite a lot of memory.
But i discovered just plugging the camcorder in via the USB with the card in triggers iMovie to download all the videos. Why can't iMovie do this with the SD card on its own.

Also whats the best way of fully removing the various video converters i tried out.

iMovie is looking for a camcorder, not SD cards. SD cards are used for lots of things. They are, for all intents and purposes, a USB drive.

Depends on the converter. As a general rule, if you simply dragged/dropped it to the Apps folder and started using it, you can simply delete the file. There are 3rd party "uninstallers" that will help root out the preference and other helper files if you prefer. None are completely foolproof, but will do perfectly well for the most part. Appcleaner is free and does a fair job.

If the app came with an uninstaller of its own, use that.

There are a couple video converters that are a bit "sketchy" and may be harder to eradicate. Skysoft in particular I've read bad things of. If you want more specific advice, you'll need to tell us what you have.

I put the SD card back into my aunts camcorder and iMovie did all the work, no converting or anything to do, this way is much better.

IMovie will take the content directly off the SD card if you use the drop down menu in iMovie and direct it to the SD card in Finder.....
