So i just bought an iMac, loving it but...i can't seem to save videos or any kind of file for that matter, to my external hd (seagate 320g). i can read files from my hd but thats about, this hd is also being used with a windows ran laptop and would still like to be able to share it between computers, my question is what do i need to be able to a save from mac to hd and still be able to use it with pc?

The problem is your external HD is almost certainly formatted NTFS. Mac can read but not natively write NTFS. Easiest solution is to get an NTFS driver APP from someone like Paragon Software and install it on your iMac?
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

EDIT: You could also reformat your external HD to FAT32 (obviously this would erase all files on the drive). This would cost nothing, but there is a file size limit in FAT32 (2GB I think). There are probably free NTFS drivers also, but I'm not familiar with any of them.

just for info the single file limit on FAT32 is 4gb :)

PARAGON Software Group - NTFS for Mac, communication channel between Mac OS X and Windows

Paragon on the website it states for MAC OS X 9.5, is that compatible with the new update? 10.7.3? i tried the trial to get a feel for it but i couldnt figure out how to work it, i most certainly must of been doing something wrong or not compatible with the new update, any thoughts?

That's the version of Paragon NTFS (9.5) and yes it works with Lion. It's a must have if you need to read and write to NTFS.

I just downloaded and read the manual. Did you follow the installation steps listed? When you do a Get Info on your external does it now show read and write access as per page 14 of the manual?

Finally got Paragon to work and had to repair the disk for Mac to read it. Thanks for all your replies and assistance.
