Investing in a new iMac I wonder whether 4GB is sufficient (primarily video editing) and consider going to 8. From several answers on the forum I see this is expensive in the store, and can be done at home. Living in Norway I would appeciate advice on quality memory that I can buy in Europe and that is compatible with tine iMac.

Hi

Most folk buy from OWC or Crucial - much cheaper. If doing lots of HD editing, many iMac users go to 8 or 12gb RAM as a minimum. FCPX works with 4gb but the more RAM, the smoother the experience.

Good time to buy as well - low prices right now.

I'll be getting my extra 8gb around early summer and hope the prices stay the way they are now.

Hi, thanks for a quick reply. Are there then slots for 2 x 2GB to be added to the existing ones, or would it be better to buy 2 x 4GB and replace those which are installed?

There are 4 slots. Leave the 2 x 2gb sticks that are already in there, and then pop the 2 x 4gb ones in. Enjoy your 12gb of RAM! :D

I got 8gb for my macbook pro and installed it myself. It was a total of 36 dollars with free shipping.

Thanks for informative answers. One further question, because somewhere I think I read that sticks should be identical. Maybe this is wrong, since Chuckoir suggests adding 4 GB sticks to the existing two 2GB sticks??
And OWC or Crucial are both trustworthy?

What that's referring to, is that the sticks within each bank should be identical.

So the two sticks you already have are identical, and the two you buy should be identical. It matters not if they're different brands, as long as you have two identical 2gb sticks side by side, and two identical 4gb sticks side by side you'll be okay.

------------||------------ <------- 2 x identical 2gb sticks
------------||------------ <------- 2 x indentical 4gb sticks.

This is a poor graphical representation of what I'm talking about.

And yes, both OWC and Crucial are trustworthy.

I recommend OWC. That's where I got mine.

I just ordered 8G from crucial. Question though. According to Crucial Scan, My MBP 13.3 2011 can handle up to 16G. Is that true?

I installed 16 GB on my iMac, which is probably overkill for what I need, but dang, it's nice.
