When attempting to change a Numbers document previously modified without issue, this pop-up message appears: "You don't have permission to write to the folder that the file 'Name' is in. You can duplicate this document and edit the duplicate. Only the duplicate will include the changes."

Clicking on "Duplicate" brings up a copy of the document to which changes seem to be allowed. However, after making the changes and attempting to close the document brings up this pop-up message: "Do you want to save the changes you made in the document 'Name copy'? Your changes will be lost if you don't save them."

Clicking on "Save as: Name copy" brings up this pop-up message: "The document 'Name copy' could not be saved as 'Name copy'. Permission denied."

Advice welcome...

It seems like you may be bumping heads with Lion's "Auto Save" feature. Are you running 10.7?
