Cider isn't a prerequisite for playing games. It is a version of WINE that is marketed to game companies to "port" Windows games over to the Mac.
There are many ways to run Windows games on a Mac. If you're interested in using a similar technology to Cider, check out CrossOver Games, which is marketed to and geared toward ordinary users.
But in general, to get the best experience with Windows games, you're going to want to install Windows via Boot Camp, or just buy Mac-specific games from the Mac App Store or Steam.
