I have a hardly used immaculate 3rd Generation iPOD but the battery appears to have gone. Apple wont support it anymore so just wondering if anyone has found a way to replace the battery?

I've done one in a 5th generation iPod and it wasn't too difficult at all - with the right tools.

Check out iFixIt.com for tools, parts, etc. They usually run around $25-30 for batteries.

Thats interesting thank you. Is it just a case of prizing off the back?

Pretty much. You can see the exact process by looking up your iPod model in the "Repair Manuals" section.

That is an awesome website, thank you very much. I have yet to see if I can get the tools and battery to the UK.

Sweet! What did it end up costing you, if I may ask?

Sure. I was able to source here in the UK from ipoddoctor.co.uk for £12 (about $20) thats what Apple offered me for it against a new one.
