Erasing a Mac system

i want to erase my mac to put it on ebay but by disk utility, the 2 options (security options and the option erase) are blank so i can't click on it.
what do i do?

Way... way too many specs to list.
Boot off the original media, and go to disk utility there. I don't think it'll let you erase an active partition

I believe you can boot off of the recovery partition and then use the disk utility to erase the disk. Reboot you system and hold down the option key and select the recovery partition.

Um yea, you CAN'T do that from the running ACTIVE instance. You NEED to boot from the recovery partition.. or find someone who can do it for you.
